Fire rains from above, just like the pictures in my book.

It looks like how I would picture hell. And Savvy doesn’t have to finish her sentence. There is only one creature that has such power.

Dragons.

I scream along with everyone else. The left half of the volcano is already obliterated by the pillar of flames the creature has shot at us from the sky.

The igneous rocks fall in giant boulders. Atlas has our son in one hand, and he takes me by the other, pulling us out of the way as witches shriek and run.

The fire feels like it is pouring from a torrent above, like it’s... multiplying. Soon everything will be on fire. The whole world as we know it.

Rocks bite into my shoulders as Atlas and I instinctively work together to shield our son. I haven’t even gotten to share his name with our mate, the name I chose just for Atlas. But already we work as a unit for the good of our son, putting aside everything for the time being for his sake.

There are conversations to be had, that’s for sure. Questions to be answered—namely how the hell he found me.

But for now, nothing is more important than the safety of our child. We have to get the hell out of here. Now.

I crane my neck just in time to see the large green-scaled underbelly of a massive beast glide overhead. The fire in me, which I’ve learned to control so well by now, reacts to the dragon. Its presence seems to light up the power within me.

Why does it feel like the dragon is calling to me? And not just me. My son is looking at the creature with more focus than he’s ever looked at anything.

The dragon lets out a bloodcurdling roar. Its tail snaps behind him, the large, spiked scales running along its length crumbling more of the volcano as it swishes behind the dragon in a lethal arc. The tip of the tail tapers off to a wickedly sharp point.

If the first time we encountered these creatures at the Academy was to test our defenses, this is something else.

Why doesn’t it attack again? Why doesn’t it finish us off?

Atlas doesn’t miss the beast either.

He puts his lips at my ear, screaming to be overheard above the chaos.

“The dragon only got half the volcano!” Atlas shouts, his face stained black with soot. I nod, understanding his meaning immediately. He hoists our son so he has a better grip on him. “When it circles back it will finish the job,” he warns. “We have to leave before that happens!”

I nod my agreement. We’re going to have to make a run for it without knowing if the dragon is outside, airborne and lying in wait like a cat waiting for a mouse to leave its hole.

Perhaps the fire was to draw us out, and we’re playing right into its hands. My eyes glow, my wolf restless within me in response to all of the many possibilities, the many dangers, but we have no choice at this point.
